In addition to governmental agencies, DC is also thriving in other industries, including expanding as a center for
international finance. Four Fortune 500 companies are headquartered within the District, including Fannie Mae,
Danaher, Pepco and the Washington Post; 50 Fortune 500 companies have offices in the District, and more
than 20 are headquartered in the greater Washington region. There are also around 1000 foreign owned
companies in the region. Finally, DC’s real estate market is one of the strongest in the nation, ranked second
by Forbes in 2009 as the best long-term housing market in the country. In 2011, DC ranked second among US
cities, and third among international cities for real estate investment.
